Associate Vice President of Development and University Advancement, Weber State University
A native of rural Washington State, Matt Spencer has worked for 17 years in development and constituent relations roles within the public university, private university, and community foundation sectors. Currently, Matt serves as Associate Vice President of Development and University Advancement at Weber State University (WSU) in Ogden where he oversees a staff of fifteen, including all development officers across WSU’s colleges, the athletics department, the division of student affairs and the division of academic affairs.
Before coming to Weber State, Matt was CEO of the Colorado Mountain College (CMC) Foundation, managing a staff of ten and unprecedented fundraising efforts for that college’s network of seven campuses in locations such as Aspen, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs and the Vail Valley. Prior to his appointment at CMC, Matt was Vice President of Membership & Development at the Vail Valley Foundation from 2006 until 2010, leading that organization to overall philanthropic revenue increases of 17% over his three-and-a-half-year tenure and in the midst of the recession. In this role, Matt honed his fundraising skills for the arts, annually securing more than $750,000 for the Vail International Dance Festival and more than $1M for the Vilar Performing Arts Center; this, in addition to more than $4M per year for other areas of the Vail Valley Foundation’s mission of community enhancement through athletics, education and the arts.
An adult urbanite before finding bliss in the high elevations of the mountain west, Matt held higher education development roles in Denver and Chicago prior to 2006. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Studies from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon; where he also played varsity football and spent time studying abroad at both the University of Havana (Havana, Cuba) and the University of San Francisco (Quito, Ecuador). Matt later earned a Master’s of Science in Sports Organization from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Over the years, Matt has served in volunteer roles with Vail Rotary Club, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and Association of Fundraising Professionals – Colorado Chapter. In 2011, Matt was named Most Outstanding Fundraising Professional by the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Colorado Chapter. Since moving to Utah, Matt has served as a board member of GOAL Foundation, Weber Pathways, on the Ogden City Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, and as chair of the Ogden Youth Competitive Sports Board of Ogden City – a board that he co-founded.
In his free time Matt likes to get out and live by hitting the slopes, river paddle boarding, golfing, hiking and mountain biking with his family. Matt lives on Ogden’s east bench with his wife, Natanee, and son, Talon, whose competitive flag football and baseball teams he enjoys coaching each year.
